As lead educators for midwives in Wales, we would like to express our concerns regarding the proposed “First 1000 days programme”.

We have noted that supporting mothers to initiate and continue breastfeeding is not mentioned.

This is very concerning given the evidence that breastfeeding can significantly impact on the health and wellbeing of newborn babies, with lasting, lifelong implications for health and behaviour.

The evidence is very clear in the recent Lancet series for breastfeeding. http://www.thelancet.com/series/breastfeeding

We are seeking assurance that a review of Welsh Government policies and programmes to support mothers (and partners) to develop close loving relationships with their babies, and the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding, will be upheld in the consideration of support for the first 1000 days.
